I've just made my first purchase using the Etsy.com platform, scented candles from a seller in Australia. Several minutes after I completed my order, I received email confirmation of my order, including order number and order details. About 8 hours later, I received another email from Etsy that my order had been dispatched by the seller. A few minutes after that, I received tracking email from the shipper, Australia Post, providing my tracking number. All very straight forward, efficient and what I would expect at minimum from an online selling platform. My only negative comment and my reason for the 4-star rating is that Etsy.com demands that you sign up/register to communicate with them, even though I made and completed my purchase as a "Guest". Some of the smaller online shops I've purchased from do not make this demand, figuring quite rightly that if I've provided them my money, they can provide me the ability to contact them. As long as the transaction between buyer and seller remains simple - they have something to sell that I want to buy - these online shops are all much of a muchness; you buy, they ship, you receive, end of story. It's when problems arise - buyer's remorse, damaged items, lost shipments - that separate online shops interested in your future custom from the jokers out to make a quick buck/pound/whatever. Since Etsy.com is mainly a middleman between the buyer and the seller, I don't imagine that I, as a buyer, would have much to complain about them.

I am impressed by the despatch information and always make sure I read the reviews to ensure that I am purchasing quality goods from a tried and tested seller. I love that small businesses can showcase their products and I have passed on various sellers to family and friends. Some items can be quite expensive but also can be original and individual. I do hope that sellers do receive a high proportion of the payments received and are not overcharged by the site.
